Who's Who in Sports - The Atlanta Hawks

The players were huddled around a 50'' flat screen on the far side of the court when we entered from underneath the bowels of Philips Arena. We sat in the first couple of rows of the lower bowl as assistant coach, Quin Snyder went over the film of the Hawks opponent for that night. The arena was silent except for the sound of his voice as the players watched intently. This was a departure from the last time I had sat in on an NBA shoot around. It was a different regime then for the Atlanta Hawks and I immediately noticed the lack of chatter that had been prevalent under a previous coach.

A security guard marched into the stands to tell one of the students with us that there would be no filming of practice or pictures from their phone (I swear it wasn't me for a change). The Hawks GM, Danny Ferry, looked on intently making sure that the rule was being followed by our group before finishing his conversation with the guard.

After a few minutes of film work, the players broke away. Much like you would expect in a high school practice, they started to clap and cheer before breaking into a trot to do perform warm-up stretches. The team spread out on the far sideline and went through a flexibility routine with therabands led by the head trainer. The players did laugh and chat during this time. Some of them looked at us in the stands obviously not used to having anyone in the stands while their morning shoot around was going on. While Philips Arena is often not sold out for Hawks games, it does seat over 18,000 people. Including our group of 20 in there to watch, there may have been 50 total people on this morning.

After the static stretching routine, there was a quick dynamic bit, the players went through some half-court sets from their opponent before breaking into starters and reserves for some drill work. While one group went through a shooting drill on the near side of the court, the others worked on a variety of different close out techniques on the other side. Coaches took the time to interject. First year coach, Mike Budenholzer was quite vocal. This represented another change from the forming coaching staff that I watched put the team through a run-through. The former coach was quiet, letting his assistants do a lot of the talking. Here, the head coach and assistants were involved throughout the practice.

After the first round of drill work, the players came back together to work on their transition defense, something that was emphasized in the earlier part of practice. Assistant coaches donned red pinnies and replicated their opponents before giving way to the 2nd teamers. Again, Coach Budenholzer was highly involved, often stopping to quickly go over exactly what he wanted and what the team could expect. These exchanges were always quick and to the point. They were often slower versions of exactly what the coach wanted before going once again at full speed. Again, my thoughts turned to the players and their respect for the coach was apparent. He never raised his voice or anything, but firmly informed the players of exactly what he wanted. The players obliged, sometimes asking questions, but often doing exactly as instructed. Those not involved in the work watched or asked assistants questions.

The players broke apart once again for drill work before coming together for some final words by Coach Budenholzer. After the team broke, some of the players stayed out to shoot. A few of them took a couple of free throw before retiring to the bowels of the arena while others stayed a good while trying to perfect their form or working from a certain spot on the floor. Soon, we were the only remaining folks in the arena.

Coach Budenholzer stopped by and answered some questions telling us that the San Antonio Spurs (where he was previously an assistant) were definitely the blueprint for what the Hawks were trying to do. He also mentioned that after years as an assistant, the biggest thing about being a head coach was looking at the entire club rather at a specific area you were in charge of. He also mentioned that dealing with the media was a new aspect of being a head coach that he was still getting used to. Coach Bud excused himself and thanked us for coming before exiting to his offices and we walked up the stands to exit out into CNN Center.

I looked down as one lone player continued to work on 3 point shots and I remembered my last trip to Philips and launching my own pointer at the same basket. Earlier in the session I joked to a fellow observer that I could hang with these guys in a free throw shooting contest (obviously buoyed by my recent 3rd place finish in such a contest over spring break) but as the net snapped with each 3 point shot that the player shot, I marveled at how effortless it was for him. It seemed like a half court shot for me. There's little doubt that even the least known NBA players, working like this guy to get better are amazing athletes with skills that are truly elite.

JD's Deuce Points (I Put On for my Kitty...)

1. The Scent of a Lady

Those who keep tweeting me during the week to see how Lady is doing post K-Swiss: she is doing fine. I can clearly tell that she appreciates all of your concerns. In fact, she has a nice little prance back in her step.

Many of you do not know this because I have kept it a Secret.  My wife and I recently bought a kitten. Her name is Victoria.  She is a little skimpy right now. In fact, she briefly went missing the other day, but I found her "under where" I last saw her (the hammock). Lady initially didn't like Victoria because she didn't fit right. But, give it a little time, and Lady is now used to everything.

2. Jock Jams

Lady switched beats really quickly and now freakin' loves Victoria.  Thus, Victoria is no longer a Secret. In fact, Lady now has a jam she plays for Victoria..."I Put On for my kitty, on on for my kitty...I put on...South Side...I put on..."  That got me thinking. What are the best pump songs ever? Lady and I each came up with our Top 5 songs:

WEEK 12 TRIVIA QUESTION (3/27)

No Outside Resources. This means you cannot use other people, the internet, or other means to help your answer.

Each year, the NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) ranks the top athletic programs in the country, based on overall performance across sports, including some sports that not all schools have (men's volleyball, women's water polo, etc.). Points are allotted to universities based on their placement in each sport, and a final score is tallied for the final yearly report. The final report consists of rankings from 10 men's sports and 10 women's sports.

For the 2012-13 athletic year, which runs from roughly August 2012 - May 2013, Name 8 of the Top 10 ranked collegiate programs. You will receive 2 points for each correct answer. You can only guess 8. If you guess more than 8 schools, your first 8 listed will be the ones that count. If all 8 of your guesses are correct, you will receive an additional 4 points.

1. Stanford, 2. Florida, 3. UCLA, 4. Michigan, 5. Texas A&M, 6. Penn State, 7. Oklahoma, 8. North Carolina, 9. Notre Dame, 10. Georgia

Athletes with Killer Instincts Since 1990: No. 4

4. Ray Lewis

With Ray Lewis, "Killer Instinct" may take on a new meaning. So may deer antlers. But, nonetheless, whether you like Ray Lewis or not, it is hard not to respect what he did in the NFL. Playing 17 years in the NFL and winning 2 Super Bowls, Ray Lewis was also a 13x pro bowler and 7x AP First Team All Pro. Lewis may be the greatest linebacker to play the game.

In addition to these gaudy accolades, perhaps, what separates Ray Lewis was his intensity. If you watched any NFL production that featured Lewis, you could instantly see how passionate and at times psycho Lewis was about playing football. Catch some of his intensity below:

Don't forget to check us out @GRHuddle. Who do you think will be the Top 3 Athletes with Killer Instincts Since 1990? Submit your feedback to us with the hashtag, #KillerInstinct.

Like NFL, GRH just Hogs Waiting to be Slaughtered

So, the madness of the first week of the NCAA tournament has subsided, baseball is less than a week away from the real first pitch (I realize games have already been played elsewhere), and golf season is getting ready to accelerate into full gear with the Master's just around the corner. It's a Spring flurry before the doldrums of summer kick in. Stay tuned to GRH for our thoughts and opinions on everything that is set to take place. Let's get to Brain Droppings. Remember, if you don't want to comment here, use the hashtag provided here on Twitter to have your say.

1) #HistoricallyBad - I usually leave the NBA talk to Brian or Lord McFather, but let's be honest. We are witnessing history right now in the NBA. There has been a lot of discussion about "tanking" to acquire the best possible chance at the #1 pick. If there are multiple teams employing this strategy then most of them are failing miserably compared to the Philadelphia 76ers who lost their 25th straight game in a row last night. How must it feel to be on a team that bad? How can you show up for work motivated every day? Philly fans are also notoriously...well let's just say impatient. How can you back a team that you know is going to lose? No wonder they occasionally throw batteries at Santa Claus and boo the March of Dimes kids. The Sixers play in Atlanta on Monday (I assume the streak will still be intact) and GRH will be on hand. So more on this in future columns perhaps.

2) #TheSlipperFits - I would say that the Cinderella of this year's NCAA tournament is Dayton. They are an 11 seed that advanced to the Sweet 16. However, if you were in Georgia over the weekend all talk surrounded on the Mercer Bears and their defeat of the mighty Duke Blue Devils on Friday. Though the Bears lost to Tennessee on Sunday, they were certainly the darlings of the state and probably the region. However, kudos need to be sent out to Dayton. The Flyers were able to top big brother Ohio State in the 2nd round and sent a Syracuse team that spent a long time at #1 this season packing in round 3. No easy victories for a team that many thought might be playing a home game in the first 4.

3) #FatPigFootball - Mark Cuban is on record as saying the NFL is in trouble. "I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion...I'm just telling you, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they're getting hoggy. Just watch. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way," Cuban stated according to ESPN Dallas. I think I see what Cuban is saying but I'm not necessarily sure I agree with his assessment. Generally, the best don't always stay the best. And make no mistake, the NFL is THE premier professional sports league in America. However, it's hard to argue that the NFL has been complacent in their packaging of their brand. Thursday night games, re-altering the draft, and scheduling that promotes parity are all things that have only fueled the NFL's popularity. When was the last time you watched the NBA or MLB draft? That's what I thought. Not to mention, almost every NFL game is meaningful. You can't say that about the NBA or MLB. It's just not true. Cuban went on to argue that safety issues could be the downfall of the sport. This may be the more true statement. There are kids who's parents don't want them involved in such a dangerous sport. However, American football is still too popular. Technology will continue to improve and kids will continue to play. I like Mark Cuban, but I just think he's wrong here.

4) #NoTimeLakers -  From time to time, Lord McFather will drop by the office and watch old NBA basketball clips on YouTube. I'm a basketball fan, but the NBA really doesn't come on to my radar until this time of the year. Teams finally start to legitimately jockey for position and playoff basketball is so much better than regular season basketball. Being a Celtics fan, McFather's most watched clips involve Larry Bird. Naturally, this means that I also see a lot of old Laker clips as the two teams were so intertwined in the 80's. It got me to thinking about how things have changed. A couple of weeks ago, the other LA team, the Clippers, threw a 45 point beat down on the Lakers. It seems that a once great NBA team has swapped places with a historically bad franchise. At least for this year. Could you imagine the Clippers being a destination for a player like Lebron 20 years ago? Would have never happened. Now the Clippers may be a better destination for many superstars. While the Lakers continue to hold on to past trophies.

That's it for today. Don't forget to follow us @GRHuddle on Twitter and look for us on Facebook as well. Hope you got into the GRH Bracket challenge and are doing well.

JD's Deuce Points (Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! Roma-roma-mamaa!)

1. Lady Chatterley's Lover

If you recall, several weeks ago, I mentioned several of the dogs noticing Lady's tan while I walked her around the neighborhood. One of those dogs, K-Swiss, was smart enough to communicate to Lady that he liked extended walks on the beach. Lady was immediately won over by K-Swiss and started sniffing his butt. K-Swiss did the same to Lady, and I was secure enough as a Father to let Lady off the leash.

Lady and K-Swiss played out in the yard for the majority of the afternoon, and things seemed to be going great...until another female dog, Posey, came along. Even though Lady and K-Swiss seemed to be enamored with one another, K-Swiss went over and started sniffing Posey. Lady clearly was not happy about this and turned toward me while I was staring out the window watching. Lady barked several times, and I definitely knew it was time to let her back in the house.

Lady and I sat and watched TV that night. She didn't have to communicate anything for me to know that K-Swiss went for a bitch and Lady was caught in Bad Romance.

2. In the Darkness?

For some reason, I have really been into Spelunking lately. This past week, I was privileged enough to be able to go to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. During the tour, they turned out the lights, and it was unbelievable dark, almost like my bedroom. During the dark period, I decided to branch off from the tour guide, if you know what I mean, and explore...4 hours later, I was outside the cave and wondering what just happened.

Athletes with Killer Instincts Since 1990: No. 5

Don't forget to sign up for GRH's 1st Annual Bracket Challenge for a chance to win an Amazon Gift Card!

5. Wayne Gretzky

Similar to soccer, I am not a huge consumer of hockey. But, to leave "The Great One" off this list would be crazy. To highlight a few of Gretzky's accomplishments, in his 20 NHL seasons, he held or shared 61 NHL records, including 40 regular season, 15 playoff, and 6 All-Star Records.

In addition to scoring a whopping 47 points the 1985 playoffs, Gretzky had 31 assists in the 1988 playoffs.  Aside from these incredible statistics, interestingly a lot of analysts noted that Gretzky was not the biggest or strongest player, but most likely the smartest player in the history of hockey. Former Hall of Famer Igor Larionov once claimed that "you never knew what he was going to do" and that "He was improvising all the time. Every time he took the ice, there was some spontaneous decision he would make. That’s what made him such a phenomenal player."

Brain Dropping's Slow Descent into Madness

Old Man Jim McFather was right about March Madness, and if you don't believe me you should read JD's last two columns. In the meantime, the entire world is filling out their brackets and there isn't any reason you shouldn't too. As mentioned yesterday here on GRH, we are having our own bracket challenge. (You can sign up here, password is GRH). We aren't getting all the headlines by giving away $1,000,000,000 like Warren Buffet, but you can set the odds of winning our challenge at a number you've heard of. All you have to do is beat Brian and I (and everyone else who beats us). Go ahead and sign up. I'll wait to finish Brain Droppings while you're gone...

Ok. Now that that's out of the way, on to the random thoughts of the week. Remember, use the hashtags and comment on any of these thoughts on Twitter or just be lazy and comment at the bottom. Your choice.

1) #ShockedShockers - So it's been almost 25 years since UNLV managed to reach the NCAA tournament with an undefeated record. Wichita State managed to do it again this year and are rewarded with what amounts to the NCAA's version of the Group of Death. Once the Shockers make it past whatever #16 seed they play, they are likely to be rewarded with uber-talented Kentucky. Now the Cats haven't been what everyone thought they would this year, but they are still loaded with talent and if shooting the ball well can beat anybody. The path gets no easier for the mid-major should they vanquish Calipari's squad. Most people project defending champ and one of the hottest teams in the country, Louisville, to be their Sweet 16 opponent. Find a way to get past the Cardinals and you have a good chance at seeing Duke or Michigan in the Regional Finals. In other words, I'd be shocked if there was an undefeated team left by the time the Final Four rolls around.

2) #CaribbeanStud - As reported earlier on GRH, I took a cruise for Spring Break last week. It was a much needed getaway and I enjoyed lounging by the pool for a week. However, it wasn't a complete week off. GRH never really takes one of those. My cruise ship had a giant screen poolside and when the World's Sexiest Man competition wasn't being shown on it (which I was robbed of by the way), it was usually tuned in to ESPN Caribbean. This meant I got to see how the rest of the world viewed sports. Let me let you in on a little secret, it was actually difficult to find a basketball game to watch. Between soccer, cricket, and tennis there wasn't any programming time left. I missed a lot of the conference tournaments but enjoyed being subjected to sports I don't normally watch a lot of. Expand your minds people. There are a lot of interesting storylines and amazing athletes outside of America.

3) #Battlefor69 - No, this is not the perverted part of the column. Get your mind out of the gutter. Locally, a team from Georgia did not get into the NCAA tournament (well, Mercer did). But, two schools did manage to make it to the nation's 2nd most prestigious post-season basketball tournament, the NIT, where they will be pitted against 30 other schools for the right to call themselves the 69th best team in college basketball. McFather and I will be live tweeting from the UGA-Vermont game tomorrow night. Check it out.

4) #WheresJeeves - The owner of the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay was pulled over the other night and charged with 4 felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and DUI. It begs the question, why don't you just hire someone to drive you around. Listen, I don't want to make light of the fact that Mr. Irsay does seem to have a problem. That is serious and I hope he can get some help. However, the man is rich enough to own one of the more successful NFL franchises of the last 15 years. Don't you think he could afford a chauffeur? I get the fact that you want to do things yourself and don't want to hire someone for every little detail, but if you know there's a strong chance you're going to take a bunch of prescription pills and go out drinking, then there's a chance it'd be better if someone else drove you.

5) #DoubleDippinDawgs - Four UGA football players were arrested last night for "theft by deception." You may ask what the hell that means, so I will tell you. Apparently these four guys (1 starter), were given their scholarship stipend checks by the UGA Athletic Office. They then allegedly deposited/cashed them in multiple locations. UGA was the one who called it in (not the bank). The gentlemen were then arrested, charged with a misdemeanor, and released on bond. All of this on the eve of spring football practice. Twiter immediately erupted with ol' "Here we go again at UGA" and "How does this keep happening under Coach Richt" tweets. Including one by Kirk Herbstreit which drew the ire of the idiot UGA fanbase. Coach Richt has excused his fair share of players. Probably more than anyone else in the SEC I can think of and this still continues to happen. Frankly, I'm not sure what else Coach Richt can do. Kids make bad decisions. It's magnified in places like Athens and people are on the look out. This isn't good for the program but I assume these players will be disciplined if found guilty and things will continue moving forward. I'll say this though, the timing is abysmal. The team should be taking the field for spring practice today with headlines about their new defensive coordinator and the schemes he may install or how much Todd Gurley is going to practice. Instead, we have to hear about this. Hopefully it will be the only incident of significance in the offseason for the Dawgs but history tells us not to hold our breath.

Alright folks, that's it for this week. Follow us on Twitter @GRHuddle and like us on Facebook too. I'll be back with more thoughts next week.

Ground. Rule. Huddle. March Madness Bracket Challenge (Amazon Gift Card)

March Madness is finally upon us! If you have yet to read Lord McFather's piece on March Madness, I highly suggest that you do so - it's a really interesting read.

Here at GRH, we are not advanced enough yet to create our own bracket program. Therefore, we are running our group through Bleacher Report.

***There is no cost to participate. If your bracket beats Jeremy AND Brian, then you will receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card. However, if multiple brackets beat Jeremy and Brian, then the highest scoring bracket will win the gift card. Thus, in essence, there will be only 1 participant who receives a gift card and that is contingent upon finishing ahead of both Jeremy and Brian.

Here are the instructions for participating:

1. Please sign up at Bleacher Report. Log-in with your Facebook or Google Account (or create a B/R account).

2. Name your bracket.

3. Click "Join Group" and search for our group, "Ground Rule Huddle" in top right search bar. Click the + symbol to join. Password is GRH.

4. You are only allowed 1 entry.

5. Entries must be completed by B/R's cutoff date and time.

JD's Deuce Points (This Could be Love, because...)

1. Lady in Bed

Conflict struck our household for the first part of this week. If you recall, Lady has been doing a lot of swimming lately. In addition, we were showing her movies in tropical, humid locations, like My Father, the Hero. While Lady has been chirping and has an extra prance in her step, it has created a major issue for my wife and me: Lady typically likes to sleep at the base of our bed, and due to her higher level of activity, she drinks a lot of water before bed. Let me translate this for you...she has been urinating in wetting the bed.

We don't want to take her to the Vet because Lady may become embarrassed. Instead, we have developed a new strategy - show Lady a bunch of Westerns, such as Once Upon a Time in the West, The Magnificent Seven, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - it has worked like a charm!

2. The First Knight

Anyone who knows me more than a few days knows that First Knight is probably my favorite movie. It is truly a classic and should be watched with Mountain Dew Code Red and Twizzlers. About midweek, after the Lady bed-wetting snafu, I re-watched First Knight for the 2nd time. The lancing battle scenes particularly intrigued me.

So, I decided to find a local place which teaches lancing. After just a few times, I became an expert lancer and all the instructors were so impressed with my abilities. I learned very quickly that this new hobby could be love because I've had the time of my life. What I didn't tell my opponents though was that I drugged their horses before combat! A nice touch, indeed. I encourage you to invest in Dirty Lancing in your free time.
