Since the end of 2013, on Wednesdays, I ranked my Top Sports Movies. Because that list has concluded, I am creating another entertaining list for Wednesdays: Athletes with Killer Instincts since 1990.
The criteria used in making this list were competitive drive, intimidation factor, success in the clutch, overall success, and longevity in each athlete's respective sport. Further, athletes closely linked to performance-enhancing drugs that significantly impacted their performance will be left off this list.
10. Greg Maddux (Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves 'era')
You will be hard pressed to find a more intelligent pitcher ever than Greg Maddux. The 4x NL Cy Young award winner was not the most powerful pitcher of all time, but his intelligence and control of the ball undoubtedly made him an intimidating force. Further, Maddux won 18 Golden Gloves awards, making him arguably the best defensive pitcher of all time.
But, Maddux's most impressive accomplishment may have been winning 15 or more games every season from 1988 until 2004. That is simply unbelievable. In addition, during that stretch, Maddux posted ERAs of 2.18 (1992), 2.38 (1993), 1.56 (1994), and 1.63 (1995), helping to lead the Braves to the 1995 World Series Championship. I'll leave you with the following video to highlight and remember some of Maddux's greatness.
