3. Jerry Maguire
Some would consider this more of a drama than a sports movie, but for the purposes of my weekly list, I consider it a sports movie.
Elvis Mitchell of the New York Times once commented that "Jerry Maguire is loaded with them: bright, funny, tender encounters between characters who seem so winningly warm and real."
And that's what I love about this movie. Whether you're an overworked businessman, an athlete, a single mom, or a kid, many people can connect with this movie on many levels. Director Cameron Crowe, who also directed Almost Famous, does a splendid job of creating real situations with raw emotions. Tom Cruise does a remarkable job of acting in this movie and delivers several knockout speeches, including his "you complete me" moment toward the end of the movie. And, let's not forget Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s wonderful performance as an initially overbearing and arrogant athlete who grew into a very likable and genuine character.
