OVERVIEW
These lists are not overly scientific, but are merely fun comparisons of SEC and NCAA programs. First list pairs the most similar SEC fan bases, followed by the second list, which ranks the Top 10 combinations of similar successful programs since 1990.
SEC DOPPELGANGERS (Based primarily on fan base and school type)
|
School 1 |
School 2 |
Basis |
|
Alabama |
Ole Miss |
Both
Universities are extremely Greek and preppy |
|
Florida |
LSU |
Ever
seen a bunch of fans in thrown together outfits, jerseys, and random paraphernalia
 on their bodies? |
|
Auburn |
Mississippi
 State |
Both are
agricultural state schools who are looked down upon by the flagship schools
 (Alabama and Ole Miss) |
|
Georgia |
South
 Carolina |
Large
state schools that are not as preppy as Alabama and Ole Miss, but more artsy
and cultured than Auburn and Miss State |
|
Tennessee |
Kentucky |
Nice
fans overall, but a little hillbilly |
|
Texas
 A&M |
Arkansas |
Not a
great match, but both were original members of the SWC |
|
Missouri |
No one
really compares to Missouri because it’s a Midwestern school. The closest
 would probably be Georgia
|
Vanderbilt |
Once
again, no great matches because Vanderbilt is a wealthy, private school. Duke
of the ACC would be comparable
NCAA DOPPELGANGERS (Based on success, perception, since 1990)
|
Rank |
School 1 |
School 2 |
Basis |
|
1 |
Florida |
Florida State |
Both are in the top 5 for winning percentage and have
won a fair amount of Titles |
|
2 |
Alabama |
Notre
 Dame |
Arguably
the two heavy weights of all time, both have multiple Title appearances |
|
3 |
Ohio
 State |
Oklahoma |
Multiple
Title game appearances, often receive lots of media attention, but fall short |
|
4 |
Miami (FL) |
USC |
Major programs, major scandals |
|
5 |
LSU |
Texas |
Each has
another team that typically overshadows its success (Alabama and Oklahoma),
 despite lots of success |
|
6 |
Tennessee |
Michigan |
Traditional
powerhouses with Titles since 1990, mixed in with large chunks of
 mediocrity |
|
7 |
Georgia |
Virginia
 Tech |
Always
seem to be on the radar for a Title, but never seem to break through. Sizable
number of BCS appearances and wins |
|
8 |
Penn
 State |
Nebraska |
Both
were dominant in the 1990s, but have cooled significantly in recent years |
|
9 |
Auburn |
Clemson |
Obviously,
both are Tigers and have similar campuses. Each seems to get hyped a lot, but
can fall short and then surprise you when you least expect it. Obviously a
nod given to Auburn for Title |
|
10 |
Boise
 State |
Oregon |
The new
order: previously unknown entities, both schools have made a living off of
 unconventional strategies and uniforms |
